RELAXED PERFORMANCES

As a part of our mission is to create exceptional theatre that engages and resonates with our audience, we are committed to ensure that all audience members feel welcome by fostering an inclusive environment. We are proud to have continued to expand theatre accessibility over the last 45 years!

As a part of this commitment, EPAC will begin offering Relaxed Performances designed to meet the needs of audience members. The final Friday performance of each production will be a dedicated Relaxed Performance. No aspect of the production will be changed during our Relaxed Performances. EPAC will be providing accommodations designed to enable all patrons to experience live theatre at EPAC.

We will provide a “Know Before You Go” Guide prior to each Relaxed Performance to help prepare audience members for specific show elements such as run time, potentially triggering content, unusual lighting cues or effects, sudden sound cues or effects, loud noises and music, actor movement through the audience or aisles, and any other items audience members should be aware of.

Q: What is a Relaxed Performance?

A Relaxed Performance is designed to meet the needs of neurodiverse patrons. Unlike a Sensory Friendly performance, no aspect of the production has been changed. The lighting, sound, dance, and other elements of the show will remain the same EPAC quality you’ve come to expect. We strive to create an atmosphere where that “EPAC quality” theatre can be enjoyed by everyone!

Q: Why do a Relaxed Performance?

Relaxed Performances create an opportunity for people who might have difficulty with the intensity or effects of live theatre to still engage with the art form. By providing accommodations and tools, we can help these audience members enjoy the production without feeling overwhelmed.

Q: Who are Relaxed Performances for?

Anyone! Audiences who benefit from relaxed performances include individuals with sensory needs, who may prefer having tools to manage their interactions with bright lights or loud noises, young children, who may be experiencing live theatre for the first time, veterans, who may need warnings about content or sound effects in order to manage PTSD and trauma, among many others! Individuals who would like to utilize available accommodations can, and those that do not are able to enjoy the performance in the same way they would at any other.

Q: What is a “Know Before You Go” Guide?

Before each Relaxed Performance, a “Know Before You Go Guide” will be shared publicly to help prepare audience members for show elements that they will experience. Things such as sudden loud, or surprising sound cues, intense thematic elements, and lighting effects will be noted so that audience members can be prepared prior to arriving at the show.

Q: What will be available? How do I utilize the accommodations?

Noise reducing headphones, fidget or tactile toys, booster seats, and sunglasses will be available. Noise reducing headphones and booster seats will be available for sign-out at the Box Office and all other items will be available at our lending library in the lobby.

Q: How will my experience differ from seeing any other performance?

It will not! Other audience members may utilize accommodations, and this will have no impact on your performance experience. All accommodating items are silent and will not distract other audience members. No adjustments will be made to lighting, sound, or other show elements.
